CONCRETION
The word concretion can refer to any of the following: 1. the union of diverse things into one body or form or group, 2. a solid or solidified mass, 3. something made real, tangible, or specific, or 4. any of various rounded or irregular mineral masses formed by chemical precipitation around a nucleus, such as a bone or shell, that is different in composition from the sedimentary rock that surrounds it.
Like a concretion built up layer upon layer around some nucleus, time has a way of transforming history. In this reworking though, stuff gets left out, covered up, our memories elude us or nostalgia kicks in and we can never truly grasp the mood of a time in which we have not lived.
Intrigued by old, used and odd things as they are at once metaphorical and material, these bits and pieces are given a place, be it an act of preservation or a final resting place. The body of work wavers between rubble, evocative of loss and destruction, and a museum collection, redolent of history and tradition.
Symbolic pseudo-fossils and storytelling pillows, they feed on binary opposition; escapism versus realism, destruction versus subsistence. A breaking down of memory, emotions and the unknown, they sift for understanding.
